Aczone is a prescription medicine used on the skin to treat acne in adult.

Aczone is the brand name used for Dapsone (Diaminodiphenyl Sulfone, also known as DDS). It is a combination medication of clofazimine and rifampicin. It is commonly used for treating leprosy. It is even a second-line medication used for preventing as well as treating pneumocystis pneumonia and toxoplasmosis among those people having a poor immune system. There are even other widespread uses of this drug. It has been assigned to the pregnancy category B2 and C. It is usually administered topically and orally.

  • Diethylene glycol monoethyl ether, NF
  • Carbomer homopolymer type C

Uses of Aczone

Aczone is used for the prevention of toxoplasmosis among people with poor immune system. It is also used in case of dermatitis herpetiformis, acne, and many other types of skin conditions. It is even used for treating leprosy and pneumocystis pneumonia.

Side-effects of Aczone

Contraindications of Aczone

Under conditions where Aczone must not be used by the patient are:

  • Hypersensitivity to Dapsone
  • G6PD Dificiency
  • Methemoglobinemia

Aczone and Pregnancy

Embryocidal effects were seen in case of animal studies. Aczone was assigned to pregnancy category C. In spite of no well controlled study on pregnant women, animal studies have shown adverse effects on foetus. And hence, pregnant women should avoid using Aczone.
