Prilosec

PRILOSEC

Prilosec (Omeprazole) treats various acid-related stomach and esophagus problems (GERD, ulcers, heartburn, erosive esophagitis, or Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome).

Prilosec

Treat the stomach by using Prilosec

Prilosec belongs to a group of drugs called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) which are used to treat a number of gastric disorders. These include duodenal ulcers, erosive esophagitis, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), pathological hypersecretory conditions (excessive production of hormones), Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, multiple endocrine adenomas (benign tumors) and systemic mastocytosis (cancerous cells).

Statistics show that more than seven million Americans suffer with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Symptoms of GERD include heartburn, difficulty in swallowing and chest pain. If GERD is left untreated, cancer of the esophagus can occur. This is a result of stomach acid being forced back up the esophagus, causing serious damage to the esophagus. A less serious condition may also occur due to GERD, namely erosive esophagitis - this is also caused by a reflux of stomach acid.

When treating duodenal ulcers, doctors may prescribe a bacterial antibiotic as well as Prilosec. This is because duodenal ulcers are usually caused by a bacteria known as H. pylori.

Zollinger-Ellison syndrome is a rare condition. Tumors form in the pancreas and/or duodenum, causing the stomach to manufacture excess amounts of acid. This extra acid can cause peptic ulcers in the duodenum. The danger with Zollinger-Ellison syndrome is that the tumors may be cancerous and spread to other parts of the body.

Prilosec is a safe, effective way of treating minor and major gastric disorders and doctors confidently prescribe this drug, knowing that it has an excellent record.

Barrett’s Esophagus in men

Esophagus is a tube that helps in the transportation of food to the stomach from the mouth. When cells present in the lining of the esophagus get damaged due to the exposure of the acid, present in the stomach, this condition is known as Barrett’s esophagus. And Barrett’s esophagusmay result from as a complication of suffering from gastroesophageal reflux (also known as heartburn).

In case of Barrett’s esophagus, in extreme cases, the cells present in the body become cancerous resulting in the formation of cancer. And hence, it is recommended for those suffering from Barrett’s esophagus to frequently undergo a checkup for discovering precancerous cells.

Causes

Though the causes are not completely known, this medical condition is seen quite commonly in some refluxes like GER. This situation occurs when the tissues in the esophagus do not work properly since theyplay a key role in helping the body close the food pipe and preventing the acid and food from returning back to the esophagus. Cells in the esophagus turn abnormal while healing if they are repeatedly exposed to the stomach acid.

There are increased chances of developing Barrett’s disease if the individual has gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or heartburn for more than 10 years. This medical condition is common in men as compared to women. Men who are more than 50 years old are more likely to develop this disease, though it can occur at any age.

Symptoms

The tissue changes in this medical condition show no prior symptoms. Symptoms that occur due to GERD include:

  • Difficulty experienced while swallowing food
  • Experiencing frequent heartburn
  • Chest pain (though less common)

Many even don’t experience any signs and symptoms with Barrett’s esophagus. Hence, it is recommended that the patient should seek immediate help when he is suffering from acid reflux or heartburn for more than five years and has any of the following symptoms:

  • Difficulty in swallowing
  • Chest pain, similar to a heart attack
  • Excreting tarry, black or bloody stools
  • Vomiting red blood or blood looking like coffee grounds
Diagnosis

The diagnosis can be done by using endoscopy that uses a tube with a tiny camera and light for allowing the doctor to see the inside of the esophagus. The doctor will check if it is looking shiny and pink. In case of Barrett’s esophagus, the esophagus might look velvety and red.

The doctor may also examine a tissue sample taken from the esophagus under a microscope helping him/her to discern the changes. The degrees of change that the doctor might be looking for include:

  • No abnormalities or no “dysplasia”
  • Small quantity of abnormalities or low-grade dysplasia
  • Large quantity of abnormalities leading to formation of cancerous cells or high-grade dysplasia
