Cetrizine is an antihistamine drug that is used in dealing with itching, sneezing, runny nose as well as watery eye which as all allergy symptoms. This drug is also used for the treatment of cold.
Cetrizine is an over- the- counter medicine that can be bought from any pharmacy without the need of a prescription. It is available under the brand names including Zyrtec, Alleroff, Aller- Tec. It is available in the form of tablets, capsules as well as syrup.

The drug is generally safe to take, but there are some side-effects attached to the drug. They include:
- Allergic reaction: If you are allergic to any ingredient of this drug, it can lead to severe allergic reaction manifesting as hives, swelling on tongue, face, throat and lips, and difficulty breathing. You must seek medical help as soon as it happens.
- Uneven, fast or pounding heartbeat
- Severe restless feeling
- Urinating less than the usual or not urinating at all
- Problem with vision
The above mentioned side- effects are serious side- effects of cetrizine and need medical attention. The less serious side- effects attached to cetrizine include:
- Dry mouth
- Feeling tired
- Sore throat
The above mentioned side- effects of cetrizine are mild and less- serious. They do not need medical attention. They go on their own.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
The medication falls under the FDA pregnancy category B. It does not harm the fetus. But, to be on the safer side, you must tell your doctor if you are already pregnant or plan to conceive during the course of the treatment. You must discuss the potential side- effects with the doctor and take the drug if the positive effects weigh over the side- effects.
You must not take the medication if you are a lactating mother. The drug can pass into the breast milk and has the potential to harm the nursing baby.
