Heartburn is a condition where you may experience severe pain near your chest area behind the breastbone. This pain becomes more extensive when you try to bend over or lie down. Heartburn occurring occasionally can be a normal thing and not an alarming thing. Most of the people experiencing an occasional heartburn are able to deal with the discomfort that comes along by making certain changes to their overall lifestyle and some over-the-counter drugs. Only when it occurs very frequently, such that it disrupts your daily schedule or routine it can be considered to be a serious problem needing medical attention.

Lifestyle

Bringing significant changes in your lifestyle like reducing alcohol intake, quitting smoking, exercising, changing your diet, and losing weight, can significantly make the condition less worse. You can also try not to bend over after consuming meals as it tends to put more pressure to the stomach region. Though many find it difficult to stick to these changes, quitting smoking and losing weight can be helpful for many other problems as well.

Chewing Gum

Chewing gum has been seen to be quite effective for heartburn. A U.S. study showed that chewing gum can actually increase the level of bicarbonate and saliva secreted which helps in neutralizing the acids that damage the digestive system.

Food

Avoiding certain type of foods such as carbonated drinks, fatty foods, chocolate, orange juices, coffee or any caffeinated drugs, tomato juices can help in decreasing the chances of occurrence of heartburn. Replacing the unhealthy foods with high-fibre foods and vegetables will be extremely helpful in dealing with heartburn.

Acid Reducers

Acid reducers, also called H2 blockers, can help in reducing the secretion of acid in your stomach by 85 percent. This will not allow the flow of food back to your gullet. The dose will decide how long it will take to start the work. H2 blockers are known to provide greater relief than antacids.

Peppermint

Peppermint is used for curbing problems related to digestion. A new research study showed that peppermint can stop the stomach acid from creeping into the gullet, in turn helping in reducing heartburn.

Surgery

Chronic heartburn can be very difficult to deal with. Therefore, opting for surgery is quite possible. It can either be an extensive surgery or a keyhole surgery which is less invasive in nature. A U.S. research study showed that the success rate was 90 percent on a sample of 250 patients.
