Revlimid is generically known as lenalidomide. This drug is used to cure anemia in people having bone marrow/blood disorders (myelodyplastic syndromes- MDS). This drug shows a lot of resemblance to thalidomide which causes dangerous birth defects and sometimes even death of fetus.
Composition of revlimid
It is an immunomodulatory substance with antineoplastic and antigiogenic properties. The chemical formula is C13H13N3O3 with the gram molar mass of 259.3. It is available in 25 mg, 20 mg, 15 mg, 10 mg, 5 mg, and 2.5 mg tablets for oral intake.
Uses of revlimid
This drug is prescribed for those patients who lack proper functional erythrocytes and mostly to reverse their anemia need blood transfusions. It works by reducing the response of immune system, thereby decreasing the no. of functional RBCs which are naturally destroyed in the body. This medication may also be given to the cancer patients having MCL- mantle cell lymphoma and multiple myeloma.
How to use
Revlimid should be only used within the guidelines of Revlimid REMS to avoid the possible risks of the drug to an unborn baby. 2 Negative pregnancy tests of women capable of childbearing indicate that the therapy can now be started. The drug is orally administered with food or without food. To treat certain disorders, this drug is prescribed in cycles (daily once for 21 days and then discontinuing the drug for 7 days).
Side-effects of revlimid
Diarrhea, fatigue, stomach ache, nausea, dry skin, headache, trouble, sleeping, unpleasant taste, constipation, dry mouth or loss of appetite may occur as side-effects. If this drug is given to the patients of multiple myeloma, they may rarely develop other cancers like lymphoma or leukemia. Intake of plenty of liquids is advisable. If any symptoms of Painful urination, flank pain, bloody/pink urine, change in urine volume, muscle weakness/spasms are observed, then immediately the doctor should be consulted. Some severe side-effects are also noticed rarely like liver disease (fatal). People who consume revlimid for MCL seldom have deterioration (tumor flare reaction) of their MCL Symptoms. Consult your doctor instantly if you have fever, rashes, pain or swollen/tender lymph nodes.
Contraindications of revlimid
In children between the ages of 12-18 years, the use of revlimid is permitted only when the legal guardian or parent agrees to follow the Revlimid REMS Program carefully. Men or women taking this drug should use two trustable birth control methods. If any of these conditions are observed, then Revlimid should not be taken: Acute Thromboembolic Stroke, Obstruction by a blood clot in blood vessel, Pregnancy, Heart Attack, Therapy-related acute Blood Cancer, Mother who breastfeeds, Enlarged spleen, lymph tissue or liver disease, Blood clot in lungs, reduced amount of Neutrophils in Blood, Extremely reduced platelets and moderate- Severe Kidney problems. Lenalidomide may also cause allergies to some patients.
Intake of revlimid during Pregnancy
If revlimid is consumed during pregnancy, then it might cause death of fetus or dangerous birth defects (deformed infants). Thus, its intake should be avoided during pregnancy or for those who could get pregnant while the drug intake.
