Azopt

Brizolamide is the generic name for Azopt. It also goes by other brand names like Alcon Laboratories and Befardin. It's a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor that is used for lowering the intraocular pressure among patients who have ocular hypertension or open-angle glaucoma. The FDA has assigned this medication to the pregnancy category C. It is also used for raising intraocular pressure which is caused because of excess aqueous humour production.

Composition of Azopt

With a molecular weight of 383.5 and 131ºC, Brinzolamide is insoluble in water and extremely soluble in methanol and ethanol. One mL of Azopt contains Brinzolamide as the active ingredient and Benzalkonium Chloride as the preservative. The inactive ingredients are as follows:

  • Sodium hydroxide
  • Hydrochloric acid
  • Purified water
  • Sodium chloride
  • Edentate disodium
  • Tylozapol

Uses of Azopt

This medication is used for the treatment of high pressure caused by glaucoma (open angle-type) or any other eye diseases (like ocular hypertension).
