Desonate is a medication used to treat mild to moderate atopic dermatitis.

Desonate

This tropical low-potency corticosteroid was available in the market since the 1970s. This medication is used for various skin treatments that include contact dermatitis, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis (also called eczema), and seborrheic dermatitis among children as well as adults. It is available in the forms of ointment, cream, lotion, and even as foam going by the trade name Verdeso Foam. It belongs to the group VI corticosteroid.

Composition of Desonate

Desonate, an off-white to white odourless powder contains Desonite as an active ingredient. The other inactive ingredients are as follows:

  • Carbopol 981
  • Sodium hydroxide
  • Propylparaben
  • Methylparaben
  • Edentate disodium dehydrate
  • Propylene glycol
  • Glycerine
  • Purified water

Uses of Desonate

Desonate is used for treating many skin conditions (like rashes, allergies, dermatitis, and eczema). Desonide, a mild corticosteroid helps in reducing the itching, swelling and the redness that occurs in these types of skin conditions.

Side-effects of Desonate

  • Unusually warm skin

  • Pain, itching, and burning in the hairy areas, or even formation of pus in the hair roots
  • Itching and burning of the skin along with red pinhead-sized blisters

Contraindications of Desonate

There are certain medical conditions when the patient must not be given Desonate. They are mentioned below:

  • Allergy to Corticosteroids (Glucocorticoids)
  • Insufficiency of the pituitary gland
  • Insufficiency of the hypothalamus

Desonate and pregnancy

There has been no well-controlled and adequate study conducted in pregnant women, but animal studies have shown teratogenic effects. Hence, Desonate was assigned to the pregnancy category C by the FDA.
