Nexavar (sorafenib) is an anticancer medicine used to treat a certain type of liver, kidney or thyroid cancer.

Nexavar is a kinase inhibitor medication which has been approved for treating advanced primary liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma), advanced thyroid carcinoma, and primary kidney cancer (which is also called advanced renal cell carcinoma). This drug was co-marketed and co-developed by Onyx Pharmaceuticals and Bayer. Nexavar is the trade name of Sorafenib. It belongs to the pregnancy category D and is usually orally administered.

Composition of Nexavar

Sorafenib tosylate is the active ingredient in Nexavar. It is a brownish or yellowish or white solid. There are other inactive ingredients present which are:

  • Ferric oxide red
  • Titanium dioxide
  • Polyethylene glycol
  • Magnesium stearate
  • Sodium lauryl sulphate
  • Hypromellose
  • Microcrystalline cellulose
  • Croscarmellose sodium

Uses of Nexavar

This medication is very useful for treating liver and kidney cancer. It also helps in the treatment process of a particular type of thyroid cancer (differentiated thyroid carcinoma). This medication lowers the growth rate of cancer cells or stops in completely (tumours). The growth of the blood vessels inside the tumour is also lowered by the help of this drug.

Side-effects of Nexavar

The side-effects associated with the use of this cancer curbing drug may be harmful at many times. Hence, the patient must have a full knowledge about them. Some of them are listed below:

  • Yellow skin or eyes
  • Vomiting blood
  • Fast or slow heartbeat
  • Dark or red brown urine
  • Black, tarry, or red stools
  • Continuous bleeding from the gums

Contraindications of Nexavar

Under certain medical conditions the patient should not be allowed to use Nexavar. They are:

  • Allergic reaction to Sorafenib
  • Blood clotting disorder
  • Anaemia
  • Depression
  • High blood pressure
  • Angina
  • Recent operation
  • Chronic heart failure
  • Acute hemorrhage
  • Pregnancy

Nexavar and pregnancy

This medication has been assigned to the pregnancy category D which means that it is restricted to pregnant patients. Animal studies have shown evidences of fetolethality, teratogenicity, and embryotoxicity. Hence, the doctor must be fully aware if the patient is pregnant.
