Endep is a prescription drug which is an anti- depressant. The generic name of Endep is Amitrptyline. It is one of the most potent treatments for depression. It is also sued for chronic and nerve (neuropathic) pain and migraine headache.
Mode of action
Endep belongs to the class of drugs known as tricyclic antidepressants. These antidepressants work by balancing certain natural chemicals in the brain. They affect the equilibrium of neurotransmitters like serotonin.
Uses of Endep
Endep is used to treat depression. It helps in improving mood, relieving tension as well as anxiety, improves sleep, improves the feeling of well- being and also boosts energy level.
This drug could also be used in certain other conditions including:
- Nerve pain like postherpetic neuralgia, peripheral neuropathy
- Mood or mental problems like panic disorder, anxiety
- Eating disorder like bulimia
- Migraine headache
How to take Endep?
This medication is ingested orally. It has to be taken about one to four times a day or as prescribed by the doctor. It is advised to take the drug during bedtime as it reduced the daytime sleepiness.
Side- effects of Endep
Like every other drug, Endep too has a set of side- effects. The side- effects are not so serious and can be easily managed or subside gradually.
The side effects of Endep include:
- Dry mouth
- Blurred vision
- Trouble in urinating
- Weight gain
Some serious but, rare side- effects of Endep are:
- Easy bruising or bleeding
- Muscle spasm
- Mask like expressions of the face
- Persistent heartburn
- Severe abdominal pain
- Enlarged and painful breasts
- A notable decrease in libido
The very- serious side effects are:
- Vomit like coffee grounds
- Black stools
- Severe dizziness
- Pain, redness or swelling in eyes
- Changes in vision
- NMS (Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome)
- Irregular/ fast heartbeat
- Severe confusion
- Severe allergic reaction that presents as rashes, swelling and itching on face, throat or tongue, trouble in breathing and dizziness.
If you see any of the serious or very- serious side effects, you must rush to the doctor.
The drug is contraindicated if you are allergic to it or any other ingredient of it. Even of you are allergic to other tricyclic antidepressants like nortriptyline, you must not take Endep.
You must tell your doctor if you have medical history of bleeding issues, hepatic problems, breathing issues, difficulty in micturation ( urinating), hyperthyroidism, a recent history of heart attack, a personal or family history of conditions like glaucoma, psychosis or bipolar disease, a family history of seizures, suicide, alcohol withdrawal and other conditions that cause seizures.
Pregnancy and Breast feeding
If you are pregnant or plan to get pregnant during the course of your treatment, you must discuss the potential effects and side- effects with your doctor. Endep is not known to pass into the breast milk. You must tell your doctor if you are a lactating mother.
