Eskalith is a drug used for the treatment of symptoms (manic episodes) of manic depression. Te typical symptoms of manic depression include hyperactivity, poor judgment, rushed speech, aggression, reduced need for proper sleep and anger. Eskalith (Lithium) works by affecting the movement of sodium through the nerve and muscle cells within the body.
Composition of Eskalith
Eskalith which contains lithium carbonate as a active ingredient is a white coloured light alkaline powder having a molecular formula of Li2CO3 and molecular weight of 73.89. Eskalith capsule is an opaque gray cap & opaque yellow body capsule which is of strength 300 mg consisting of inactive ingredients like benzyl alcohol, D & C Yellow Number 10, FD & C Green Number 3, FD & C Red Number 40, FD & C Yellow Number 6, gelatin, sodium lauryl sulfate, lactose, cetylpyridinium chloride, magnesium stearate, titanium dioxide and povidone,
Uses of Eskalith
Eskalith is a medication which is used for the treatment of manic depressive disorder (also known as bipolar disorder). It typically works by stabilizing the mood & reducing the extremes in the behavior by restoring balance of the certain naturally occurring substances in the brain. This medication can also be used for the prevention of certain types of headache like cluster headaches.
Side Effects of Eskalith
In case of Eskalith, the following are the severe side effects which one might experience after consumption of the medication-
- Problem in breathing;
- Swelling of the lips, face and throat
- Extreme thirst
- Urinating more than usual
- Less urination in some cases
- Weakness, fever
- Feeling of restlessness or confusion
- Eye pain and problems in vision
- Pain, cold feeling
- Feeling of light headedness
- Fainting or slow heart rate
- Fast or uneven/ rapid heartbeat
- drowsiness, Nausea, diarrhea, muscle weakness, vomiting, tremor, lack of coordination, ringing in the ears or blurred vision
In case of Eskalith, the following are the common side effects which one might experience after consumption of the medication:

- Upset stomach or pain in the stomach
- Thinning of hair or drying of the hair
- Itchy skin.
Contraindications of Eskalith
One should not use Eskalith if he/ she is:
- Allergic to lithium
- Suffers from some heart disease or kidney disease
- Has an underactive thyroid
- Has a debilitating or a severe medical condition
- If one is dehydrated or has low sodium levels in the blood (This condition is called as hypothermia).
Pregnancy and Eskalith
Eskalith is an FDA pregnancy category D drug which might cause some degree of harm to the unborn baby. Lithium should not be used by one without the doctor's consent. One needs to use some effective type of birth control while on this medication. Eskalith can pass into the breast milk causing serious harm to the baby being nursed. One should not use this medication during breast feeding.
