The generic name of the antibiotic Flagyl is metronidazole. It helps in fighting against the bacteria in the body. This medication is used for treating infections of the stomach, joints, vagina, respiratory tract, and skin. Though, it may not be used to treat any yeast infection in the vagina.
Composition of Flagyl
Flagyl, also known as metronidazole tablets are an oral formulation. Flagyl is the brand name of the medication, while metronidazole is the generic name. The inactive ingredients present in this antibiotic are as follows:

• FD&C Blue No. 2 Lake

Uses of Flagyl
This medication helps in treating many different types of infections. The class of antibiotics it belongs to is called nitroimidazoles. The main function of Flagyl is to prevent the growth of protozoa and bacteria.
Flagyl can be used only for the treatment of protozoal and bacterial infections. It does not work in case of viral infections (like flu and common cold). The misuse and unnecessary usage of this drug can reduce its efficiency.
Metronidazole or Flagyl can be used along with other anti-ulcer medications for treating some types of stomach ulcers.
Side-effects of Flagyl
There are various side-effects associated with Flagyl which might require medical attention. Some of them are mentioned below:

• Eye pain
• Decreased vision
• Changes in the pattern of speech
• Numbness, tingling, painful, or burning sensations in the feet and hands

Contraindications of Flagyl
Patients having any of the following conditions should be refrained from having Flagyl:
• Allergic reaction to nitroimidazoles
• Any brain disorder
• Alcohol intoxication
• Decreased Neutrophils
• Severe liver disease
• Pain or tingling in the hands or feet
• Prolonged Q-T Interval on EKG
Flagyl and pregnancy
There has been no scientific proof that Flagyl is harmful. Though, it cannot be declared safe either. It is necessary to see if the benefits derived are way more than the risk taken in case the patient is pregnant or plans on being pregnant.
