Geodon is generically known as ziprasidone HCl. Geodon is used to cure some specific mood/mental disorders (bipolar disorder, schizophrenia). Geodon comes as a capsule (Ziprasidone HCl) for oral intake and as an intramuscular injection (ziprasidone mesylate).
Composition of Geodon
Zi[rasidone is a psychotropic substance having no chemical relation with butyrophenone or phenothiazine agents. It belongs to a class of medicines known as antipsychotics. The working of geodon is carried out by restoring the proper balance of brain neurotransmitters. The chemical formula is C21H21ClN4OS with a molecular mass 412.94 g (free base).
Uses of Geodon
Geodon intramuscular is used to treat acute agitation in the patients having schizophrenia.This helps in reducing hallucinations and aids you to have a more positive and clear thoughts about yourself, take an active role in daily life and feel less irritated.
How to use Geodon
The medicine has to be orally taken with food as directed by physician, generally twice/day. The capsules have to be swallowed as a whole. The dosage varies with the severity of the medical ailment and response to the drug. The medicine should be taken daily for effectiveness.
Side-effects of Geodon
Some common side-effects of this drug are lightheadedness, dizziness, nausea, drowsiness, runny nose, vomiting and cough. If any of the following severe side-effects are observed then consult your doctor:
- Muscle spasms
- Difficulty in swallowing
- Mood variations
- Infection signs such as persistent sore throat, fever
Rare side-effects include:
- Increased blood sugar level
- Increased thirst
- Frequent urination
- Weight gain
- Increase in triglyceride levels
In females, the symptoms include the following:
- Increase in prolactin levels
- Missed/stopped periods
- Difficulty in conceiving
In males, the following signs may be seen:
- Inability of sperm production
- Decreased libido
- Enlarged chests
These symptoms may be responsible to increase the risk of diabetes and heart disease. The drug may also cause NMS (neuroleptic malignant syndrome) sometimes. Some very severe side- effects include the following:
- Signs of liver destruction
- Swelling of lymph glands
- Extreme dizziness
Contraindications of Geodon
Allergic person should avoid this drug. The doctor should be aware of the patient's medical history, mainly: seizures, low leucocytes count, trouble in swallowing, diabetes, heart disorders, dementia. It may cause a condition called QT prolongation affecting the heart rhythm. This can cause severe irregularity in the heartbeat. This drug reduces the sweat production in the body resulting in more exposure to the heat strokes. Avoid direct exposure with the harmful sun rays.
Pregnancy and Geodon
The medication should be avoided during pregnancy unless an emergency arises. Mothers who have consumed this drug during the last trimester of their pregnancy may give birth to infants with some symptoms like muscle stiffness, feeding and breathing problems, constant crying, drowsiness and tremor. It is not yet known whether the medicine passes in to the mother's milk. Breast-feeding during the intake of this drug should be avoided due to the possible risks to the nursing infants.
