Urecholine is the brand name for Bethanechol. It is used to treat bladder bowel problems like urinary retention. It is cholinergic agent that stimulates bladder to contract and urine to flow.

Mechanism of action (MOA)

Bethanechol is a muscarinic receptor that acts on the cholinergic receptors in smooth muscle of the gastrointestinal tract and urinary bladder. It increases the tone of the detrusor muscle in the urinary bladder producing an increase in intravesical pressure. It helps by emptying the bladder and relieves the micturition . It also initiates the gastric and intestinal motility and also raises the lower esophageal sphincter pressure.

Uses of Urecholine

  • Alleviates dry mouth
  • Treat urinary retention
  • Treat lack of muscular tone in gastrointestinal tract

As it is a cholinergic receptor it mainly helps in relaxing the detrusor muscles in the urinary bladder and helps in urinary flow .
